The Trans-Siberian Radio Project: Enacting Polymorphous Radio
Natilee Harren (with David Rose)

On the Trans-Siberian train, Natilee Harren and David Rose operated a self-made radio station.
Read the paper that introduces the project.

The following MP3 files (16 bit) are recordings of the broadcasts that were made on the train (be aware that these are sometimes large sound files):

The Trans-Siberian Radio Project commissioned 3 experimental electronic artists to create new sound works during the journey. They were Scanner (UK), Nathan Davis (US) and Angel Sánchez Borges (Mexico). On September 10, 2005, the radio team e-mailed an audio clip recorded in Red Square, Moscow to the artists, who had the time-length of the train's journey from Moscow to Beijing to create a new audio work from the sample. Upon the train's arrival in Beijing, the results were premiered via broadcast at the Space ieum art gallery in the Dashanzi art district. The concept of this sub-project was to expand the area of production of the conference to include participants in other geographical locations. Listen to the sound works:

  • 'Rehearsing the Present' by Nathan Davis - 16bit (0.7MB) - 128bit (5.5MB)
  • 'Red Channel' by Scanner - 16bit (0.5MB) - 128bit (3.5MB)
  • 'Red Square Mix' by Angel Sánchez Borges - 16bit (0.5MB) - 128bit (3.8MB)

All audio works are licensed under Creative Commons licence.

To listen to these recordings, you will need a widely available free MP3 player, such as winamp or itunes
